Porsche 911 R 2016

The 991-generation Porsche 911 had more than its fair share of highly prized variants, but for many enthusiasts, it’s not the ultimate GT3 RS model that sits in their dream garage. The 911 R is there instead, offering a more road-focused driving experience (as it’s closely related to the less hardcore GT3 version) but with the screaming naturally-aspirated straight-six engine from the GT3 RS, one of the best engines of that decade.

More importantly, the 911 R was aimed squarely at drivers craving engagement, since it came with a manual gearbox. The R also shed the GT3’s aero, so has a sleeker, wing-less look. It’s more subtle; to the untrained eye it looks like a normal 911, so owners can avoid unwanted attention while they enjoy one of the best road-focused sports cars ever made.

Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing 2021

American manufacturer Cadillac caught the eyes of car enthusiasts around the world in 2021 with the launch of its CT4-V Blackwing, a super-saloon with a manual gearbox as standard. Isn’t Cadillac that brand that makes massive land-yaughts? Not any more, it’s clear, as super saloons in the rest of the world like the Mercedes-AMG C63 ditched the enthusiast’s preferred gearbox choice years ago.

The Blackwing isn’t just about the six-speed, though, as it’s a 470bhp monster thanks to its 3.6-litre turbo V6 that goes from 0-60 in about four seconds. The auto gearbox version is faster, but we all know that doesn’t mean it’s better.

Honda Civic Type R 1999


The EK9 Honda Civic Type R is at the same time a humble hatchback and one of the best driver’s cars ever built. It’s as reliable as any other golden-era Honda, yet the razor-sharp handling and screaming 8,400rpm 1.6-litre engine make it feel like a race car that you’re somehow allowed to drive on the road.

It was only sold in the Japanese market, but grey imports around the world mean it’s a staple of track days and car meets everywhere these days. It’s easy to see why: there are very few cars that offer this kind of driving experience with the maintenance costs of a normal family car. Later Civic Type Rs expanded on this, but none are more visceral than the original.

Renault KWID Concept 2014


We love a crazy concept car, and Renault has put out some excellent examples over the years. In 2014 at India’s Auto Expo the brand unveiled the KWID Concept, a mad-looking mini-SUV that previewed the upcoming Kwid road car - which of course looks nothing like it. The concept’s bulging wheelarches, off-road tyres, ultra-low roofline and bright yellow styling elements are wonderful features that never made it to production.

Neither did the interior, which is somehow even more bold: it featured a bizarre layout with three front seats and two in the back, a central driving position, white seat coverings that look like a bird’s nest, as well as a golden steering wheel.

Škoda 110 R Coupe 1970


Škoda is mostly known for its excellent family cars in the modern era, but back in the early 1970s the brand was actually producing sports cars and coupes of its own original design. The 110 R is a cool-looking rear-engined coupe with a humble 1.1-litre engine, built in Czechoslovakia (now Czechia) for around a decade. It was never as successful as more mainstream European brands’ 70s coupes, but it certainly has the cool factor these days on account of its quirky looks and unusual heritage.

The 110 R formed the basis of the 130 RS rally car, which was rather successful in-period, giving the Czech brand some racing kudos. In some ways you could argue that the 110 R is part of the genesis of the current vRS models.
